The first official trailer for the new "Mummy" film offers a closer look at Tom Cruise as the new headliner for the franchise and his nemesis, an ancient Egyptian princess whose powers decimate modern-day London.

"Welcome to a new world of gods and monsters," says the narrator.

With Cruise replacing Brendan Fraser as the mummy slayer, the tone of the film is decidedly darker, with no pithy one-liners or comic relief to vary the action-packed scenes.

"Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension," reads the synopsis.

Also starring are Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe.
