OTTAWA - Canadian experts are joining a multinational team investigating the sinking of a South Korean warship following a mysterious explosion two months ago.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said Sunday three naval experts will join the investigation at the request of the government of South Korea.

The 1,200-tonne warship went down near the North Korean waters on March 26, killing 46 South Korean sailors.

Seoul has not directly blamed North Korea for the sinking, and Pyongyang has denied involvement, but suspicion has focused on the North given its history of attacks.

The two Koreas remain technically locked in a state of war because their three-year conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953.

Cannon said Canada is strongly committed to the security and stability of the Korean Peninsula.
