A woman is in hospital with serious injuries after falling several storeys as she apparently tried to cross between two building rooftops.

Emergency crews were called to the scene near College and Bathurst streets in downtown Toronto at approximately 9 p.m. on Monday night.

The woman, in her 20s, was apparently visiting friends at the time of the incident.

“They were out on a rooftop patio and this lady decided to go over top from one roof to another,” Sgt. Sean Cassidy told CTV Toronto. He added that the three-foot-wide gap between the two buildings was covered by a “plastic material that she thought, I guess, would hold her body weight. Unfortunately it did not and she fell approximately 40 feet.”

Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell told CP24 that firefighters had to perform a high-angle rescue, using a specialized basket to remove the woman from the gap and lift her back onto the roof.

“We couldn’t just go in at street-level, we had to basically follow her path back down to her,” Powell said.

There, paramedics assessed her condition. She was put on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to hospital.
