RCMP officers in Alberta are advising residents to "trust your gut," after a man impersonating a police officer stopped a driver and asked her to get out of her car.
The incident happened on Thursday night, the RCMP says.
Police say the woman was driving on a highway north of Grande Prairie, Alta., when she saw flashing lights in her rear view mirror.
She pulled over, and a man who was not in uniform walked up to the car.
"Due to the time of day, it would be very difficult to determine why not to stop," Alberta RCMP Const. Michelle Mosher told CTV Edmonton.
The man asked the woman to get out of the vehicle, but Mosher said she hesitated, sensing something was wrong.
"Fortunately for her, she did have that 'spidey sense' of not getting out of the vehicle," Mosher said.
The constable said the man also didn't provide a name or badge number.
After the incident, the woman called police to report the interaction, and they told her the man had been an imposter.
A similar incident happened in Edmonton in March, when a 19-year-old woman was pulled over by a man posing as an off-duty officer.
"He said 'Do you want me to give you a ticket? Do you want me to?'" the woman told CTV Edmonton at the time. "He kept threatening it."
Now, police are warning other Albertans to be alert for people posing as cops.
When in doubt, the RCMP recommends asking for identification.
And if the person claiming to be an officer fails to provide ID, Mosher said, call 911 and report the incident.
"Obviously you have to sometimes trust your gut," she said.
