Three people have been arrested after a Toronto man was shot and killed in Louisville, Ky., during a robbery that happened after the Kentucky Derby on Saturday night.
The man has been identified as 49-year-old Scott Hunter by Louisville police.
Hunter was the co-owner of Grinder Coffee in Toronto's east end. A sign posted on the door of the Gerrard Street East café said the eatery was closed until Tuesday.
One of Hunter’s colleagues, who did not want to be identified, said the Toronto man was an avid cycler who took part in IronMan events.
She says Hunter had been invited to the famed horse race by a friend from the West Coast.
Hunter also worked at House on Parliament, a popular restaurant in Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood. The pub’s owner said the unexpected death has been difficult for his employees.
“It hit hard with a lot of them. He’s been here nine years,” Beau Opperman told CTV Toronto Monday afternoon.
Three people have been arrested in connection with death, which occurred hours after Saturday’s Kentucky Derby horse race, according to Louisville Metro Police Lt. Todd Kessinger.
Kessinger says the victim and his friend were robbed between 11 p.m. and midnight.
The two Canadians fought back and one was fatally shot during a struggle, Kessinger adds.
Kessinger calls the death “hard to explain.”
He says there were “multiple robberies” that night.
Two men and one woman were arrested in connection with the death: 19-year-old Tyrone Thomas, 20-year-old Fatima Abu-diab and 18-year-old Fahed Abu-diab.
