A seven-week-old baby has been reunited with her mother after a man in Surrey, B.C. carjacked an SUV with the infant inside.

The baby was unharmed and police have someone in custody, although they are still investigating.

Police say the carjacking took place after a string of other crimes on Tuesday. Officers first responded to a report that a man with a gun was spotted near Fraser Highway. Shortly after, a Toyota pickup truck was stolen with a woman still inside.

That pickup truck was then involved in a crash and flipped on its roof. After that, a Ford Escape was stolen with the seven-week old baby inside.

“All officers everywhere in Surrey that were not attached to an urgent file immediately went and patrolled aggressively looking for the vehicle and the baby,” RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet told reporters.

Officers found the abandoned SUV just minutes later and returned the baby to her mom.

“Probably the best Christmas present our officers have ever given to anyone,” Paquet said.
