A photo of a grocery store employee walking an elderly customer home along an icy sidewalk in Halifax has gone viral.

The photo taken by Terri Bordage Stevens has accumulated nearly 14,000 likes on Facebook and has been shared over 5,000 times.

Stevens spotted Austin MacNeill, a cashier at a Halifax Sobey's, and the woman outside the grocery store on Friday.

MacNeill was helping the blind, elderly woman navigate the icy sidewalk, guiding her by the arm and also carrying her groceries.

MacNeill said he didn't know the woman, but workers at the store do their best to help out customers who could use a hand.

"It's just kind of the thing we do around this store," MacNeill told CTV Atlantic.

"There's a lot of people that come in that just kind of need an extra hand and whoever is around to give it to them usually does."

Sobey's has recognized MacNeill's good deed by making him a sign. The store's Facebook page also shared the photo, with the caption "A real heartwarming way to welcome the weekend."
