The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party's new leader Patrick Brown says he promises to move the party forward in a "transparent" way.

After the federal MP from Barrie won the party leadership at the Toronto Convention Centre on Saturday, Brown said he doesn't take his new responsibility lightly.

"This is one giant province and it was one long, arduous test and I am very honoured by the opportunity," Brown told CTV News Channel.

Brown, 36, says the Ontario Liberal government was elected by default because the Conservatives "blew" the last election.

"There was so much that warrants conversation and we brought out this ridiculous proposal to cut 100,000 jobs," Brown said.

"I want to make sure we build our platform based on consulting and valuing the membership."

Education 'chaos'

Brown has been elected during a time where the relationship between teachers across the province and the government are on unstable terms.

Brown says he promises to "expose" the Liberal government's handling of the situation.

"It’s chaos in the education file," Brown says, "This is a government that promised peace in the classroom."

"Now we're in a situation where parents are pulling students out of the classroom," he adds.

The new leader is referring to the controversial sex-ed curriculum that thousands of parents from across Ontario have fought against.

"There is a petition of over 70,000 parents," Brown said in the interview.

"I would go back to the drawing board and say, 'How do we get everyone to the point that you're comfortable that we can have everyone in the classroom?'

"I think those who have concerns, you need to sit down, have a dialogue of respect."

The provincial leadership win marks another big step for the Brown, who has risen quickly in his political career. He was elected to Barrie city council at age 22, before he was elected Member of Parliament for Barrie, Ont., at 27 years old.

Brown says a main reason for his latest move was frustration over results of the provincial election that saw the Conservatives crushed by the Liberals.

On a lighter note, Brown says that he is proud to wear the Barrie Colts jersey when asked which hockey team he supports.

Brown will formally resign his federal seat in Barrie on Wednesday.
