Police are investigating the death of a young boy who was run over by a piece of heavy farm equipment early Thursday.

The incident occurred on a rural property about 120 kilometers west of Toronto, in the township of Woolwich, Ont. Waterloo regional police say they were called to a family farm around 11:30 a.m.

Police have confirmed the child, who is said to have been between two and three years old, was playing outside when he encountered the piece of machinery. A neighbour told CTV Kitchener it is unclear how the boy came to be run over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stg. John Nymann of the Waterloo regional police traffic services branch said the family and officers at the scene are wracked with grief.

“The family at this time is grieving, and frankly many of us emergency responders on the scene are parents ourselves. We can relate, and really appreciated the depth of the grief that the family is experiencing now.”
