Sobeys has investigated the case of a 15-year-old boy from Cape Breton, N.S. who bit into one of its store-made cookies and discovered a blade inside, calling it “an isolated incident.”

Lesley Ross’ children were recently enjoying the cookies after dinner when her oldest son pulled the tip of a blade from his mouth.

The next day, Ross went back to the bakery with the blade and questioned the manager of the bakery department about how the blade could have wound up there.

“The manager of the bakery, I asked her twice, and finally the second time she said, ‘Yes I did check the knives. It was the tip of one of our knives,’” Ross told CTV Atlantic.

According to a statement issued by a Sobeys spokesperson, “When Ms. Ross contacted the store, they immediately contacted our food safety team who conducted a thorough investigation and confirmed this was an isolated incident.”

Sobeys gave Ross a $20 store gift card as well as a free package of cookies, but Ross said she wasn’t looking for any freebies out of the ordeal.

“Just an apology, a sincere apology. Sorry might have been thrown in there but not like ‘Oh my goodness I’m so sorry,’” she said.

According to the Sobeys spokesperson, Sobeys has reinforced the food safety policies and procedures to the employees working in the bakery at the location and are taking the incident very seriously.

Ross said she has thought about buying groceries from a nearby competitor but has decided to stick with Sobeys. However, she won’t be buying anymore store-made baked goods.
