A man who is Facebook friends with Moncton shooting suspect Justin Bourque has been charged with uttering threats against police.

New Brunswick RCMP say Jasper John Stam, 25, has been charged with uttering threats to cause death to police between May 10 and May 18. He appeared in court Monday.

The RCMP tweeted Monday that Stam’s arrest is not connected to the shootings that killed three Mounties and injured two others last Wednesday in Moncton.

However, court documents show that Stam was ordered not to have any contact with Bourque, CTV’s Katie Simpson reported. Bourque and Stam are Facebook friends.

On his Facebook page last week, Stam posted a link to someone else’s blog post defending Bourque.

On Saturday, he wrote: “Just got fired for being friends with someone.”

In response to other Facebook users who commented on the post, Stam wrote, in part, “Justin had no mental illness. He did not do hard drugs.

“He did not do anyone who deserved respect any wrong. Not ever. One of the most respectable of my friends. Polite also.”

Bourque, 24, is facing murder and attempted murder charges after three RCMP officers were shot and killed last Wednesday in Moncton. Two other officers were injured in the shooting, and are now recovering.

Bourque was arrested following a massive manhunt that kept northern Moncton in a lockdown for 30 hours.
