Your efforts to become an instant millionaire will now cost you more, as the price of a Lotto 6/49 ticket has increased by 50 per cent ahead of Wednesday’s draw.

The cost of each play is now $3, up from $2, a change that is part of the first overhaul of the game in 10 years.

Other changes include:

  • a guaranteed $1 million prize draw.
  • base jackpots will begin at $5 million, up from $3 million.
  • a new Free Play prize when two of six numbers are matched.

The new features will debut with Wednesday’s draw. Tickets began selling at the new price on Sunday.

“We haven’t made any changes to the game for over 10 years now, so we recognized that it was time to make some improvements in order to ensure that the game remains successful over the long term,” Courtney Pringle Carver of the Atlantic Lottery Corporation told CTV News.

Despite the new million-dollar draw and the increase in the base jackpot, some lottery players would like to get more bang for their buck.

“The prices go up, go up, go up, but our purse doesn’t go up,” lottery player Jackie Bourque told CTV Atlantic.
