WHITNEY PIER, N.S. -- A historic church in Nova Scotia has been reduced to rubble after being ravaged by a fire.

Tom Urbaniak, chair of the St. Mary's Polish Church council, says the fire at the 101-year-old church in Whitney Pier broke out around 12:20 p.m. Saturday.

Urbaniak says dozens of parishioners and neighbours gathered as the church went up in flames, hugging each other and crying.

No one was injured.

He said firefighters were able to salvage two of the church's signs and officials will scour the rubble in the coming days for other salvageable mementoes.

Urbaniak says parishioners have already decided to rebuild the church.

He says the fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the blaze, which is believed to have started in the back of the church.
