IQALUIT, Nunavut - The crew of a fishing vessel that was taking on water after hitting ice off Nunavut is now safely ashore in Greenland after being escorted back to port.
The 76-metre factory freezer vessel Saputi struck ice around 10 p.m. Sunday, but none of the 30-member crew were injured in the collision.
A Canadian military aircraft dispatched from Nova Scotia dropped four pumps that were used to remove the water that seeped on board through a puncture in the hull.
Maj. Rhonda Stevens said in an interview that Saputi met with a Danish naval vessel that escorted it to Nuuk, Greenland, arriving in the port at 10 p.m. AT on Tuesday night.
Stevens, the head of the Joint Rescue and Co-ordination Centre in Halifax, praised the crew of the Hercules for successfully dropping the pumps to the crew of the fishing vessel.
