SURREY, B.C. -- Family members of an on-duty Mountie who died during a traffic accident in Surrey, B.C., say they're finding comfort in the messages of condolence, acts of goodwill and overwhelming support sent by the public.
Const. Adrian Oliver died Tuesday morning after a collision between his unmarked police cruiser and a transport truck at an intersection. The 28-year-old was pulled from the tangled wreckage and rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
"It is truly hard to express the feelings we have as we deal with the tragic and unthinkable loss of a son, brother, grandson, lifelong companion, friend, colleague and police officer," said the family in a statement released through the RCMP.
"It is also hard to comprehend the impact his passing has had on the greater community and country he was committed to serve."
They said Oliver was compassionate and caring, passionate about policing, had an infectious smile, was willing to help anyone and everyone, and was equally dedicated to his family and friends.
Oliver began his training as a cadet with the RCMP in December 2008 and his first posting as a constable began on June 1, 2009. He served in the Surrey detachment until he died.
RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Peter Thiessen said earlier this week that Oliver worked general duty in the North Surrey and Whalley area and was near the end of his 12-hour shift when the accident occurred.
The family thanked first responders, emergency services, and hospital staff for their efforts, and said condolences have come from across the country.
Preparations are now underway for a funeral service, which has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Langley Event Centre, in Langley, B.C., with a march beginning at noon.
