A baby and two men are safe thanks to a dog whose barking and scratching led to their rescue from a fire in rural Manitoba.
Albert Sumner says Duke the dog’s noises alerted him to the fact that something was wrong last Saturday.
It happened on Pinaymootang First Nation, in house Sumner shared with his sister, her one-year-old son and an elderly uncle.
When Sumner opened a door in response to the noises, he saw flames on Duke’s fur, and then discovered the fire.
“If he didn’t bark or scratch at the door, that fire probably would have (spread) without us knowing,” he says.
Sumner managed to pull his deaf 79-year-old uncle and the baby boy out, but the house and its contents were completely destroyed.
Duke’s owner Doreen Sumner says he will be rewarded for his work with a steak dinner.
