MONCTON, N.B. -- The Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton, N.B. says one of it's long-time residents has suddenly died.

Zoo general manager Bruce Dougan says a 15-year-old female cougar named Squeak died Thursday at the University of Prince Edward Island veterinary college.

Dougan says a necropsy showed the cougar died of acute peritonitis, an infection that affects the kidneys of felines.

He says the animal's death was a shock to zoo staff who had observed no unusual behaviour prior her last feeding on Wednesday.

The cougar was found motionless in her exhibit by her handler on Thursday.

Squeak had lived at the zoo since her arrival in December 1998.
