STEWART, B.C. -- A 50-year-old man has been identified as the person killed in an avalanche in northwest B.C. Tuesday.

The B.C. Coroner's Service says Pat Lawrence Desmarais of Telkwa was doing mine survey work with another man 50 kilometres outside Stewart, near the Alaska border, when the avalanche came down.

Desmarais was swept about 300 metres down a steep slope, but the second man managed to survive.

The Coroner's Service, WorkSafeBC and B.C.'s mines inspector are investigating the death.

Ten people died in avalanches around B.C. during the 2011/2012 season.
