HALIFAX -- Condolences are pouring in after the death of Burnley (Rocky) Jones, who is being remembered as a human rights crusader and champion of Nova Scotia's black community.

African Nova Scotian Affairs Minister Maureen MacDonald says Jones was a respected leader who had a prominent voice in many of the social equity and civil rights discussions in the province.

MacDonald says Jones, who was named to the Order of Nova Scotia in 2010, spent four decades promoting racial equality and civil rights.

After graduating law school in the 1992, he worked as a legal aid lawyer, then opened his own firm, which focused on racial equality, human rights cases and labour law.

Jones, a high-profile Halifax lawyer, suffered a heart attack Sunday and died in a city hospital Monday.

He was 71.
