A British Columbia university is training students on what to do in an active shooter scenario.

Simon Fraser University partnered with the Burnaby RCMP to produce a video that simulates an on-campus shooting.

"Although active threat events are extremely rare, they have taken place in Canada," RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Critchley says in the video. "It is imperative that you recognize when a potential active threat situation may be unfolding."

The video encourages students to protect themselves in the event of an active threat, and offers the following tips:

  • Run: Evacuate the area if it is safe to do so
  • Hide: Shelter in place and hide yourself if you cannot evacuate safely
  • Take action: As a last resort, commit yourself to delay, block or overcome the threat

"Work with people around you. Do what you need to stay alive, including using force to protect yourself," campus safety director Julie Glazier says in the video. "You could be literally fighting for your life."

The active threat campaign also includes a website and workshops that are available to students, faculty and staff.
