NOBLEFORD, Alta. -- Sixteen cattle are dead after a truck hauling them overturned in southwestern Alberta.

Mounties say the cattle hauler struck a newly built traffic circle on Highway 23 west of the village of Nobleford.

Police said 11 cattle died on impact and another five had to be euthanized by attending veterinarians.

The driver of the truck, who is from Saskatchewan, was treated and released on scene.

Police say alcohol or drugs were not a factor and road conditions at the time were dry with good visibility in all directions.

Charges under the Traffic Safety Act and Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulations are pending against the driver.

Police did not say where in Saskatchewan the driver was from.
