OTTAWA - Canada has a new top soldier.

Lt.-Gen. Peter Devlin took over as head of the army today during a ceremony at Canada's war museum in Ottawa.

A veteran of exchange service with the U.S. in Iraq, Devlin is an infantry officer who started out 32 years ago with the Royal Canadian Regiment.

He also commanded the multinational brigade in Kabul in 2003 and 2004.

Devlin says he recognizes the challenges ahead and under his stewardship the army will have to realign and consolidate.

Devlin replaces Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie who moves over to become chief of transformation, an advisory post meant to help shepherd the Canadian Forces into its post-Afghanistan role.
