Honey, shall we take the Ferrari today? Perhaps the Lamborghini? How about the McLaren?

Those aren’t questions that most people will ever ask because, let's face it, owning a supercar is not cheap. The initial purchase price is prohibitive itself, and then you have to factor in all sorts of other expenses to get your actual cost of ownership. Unless you have a few spare millions burning a hole in your pocket, a LaFerrari, McLaren P1 or Porsche 918 Spyder likely aren't in your budget.

But imagine being able to drive these cars on a regular basis, as hard as the law will let you, without having to deal with the headaches and the necessary hedge fund that supercar ownership requires.

There is actually a way to do this: Supercars Canada.

Supercars Canada is a club whose claim to fame is offering the “ultimate alternative” to supercar ownership. It’s for people who love cars and love driving, but don’t necessarily want to deal with the diva-like qualities supercars often exhibit.

One thing the club makes very clear is that it is not a rental service. Anyone who wants to join must go through a vetting process - even if you're just an autos journalist getting a small demo of what membership is like.

A clean driving record and composure behind the wheel is a must. Before you’re trusted on your own with one of these cars, you have to take a spin with one of the club’s founders riding shotgun and evaluating your driving. No pressure.

On a wet Saturday morning, I arrived at the Supercars Canada office. Parked outside were over half a million dollars worth of metal, rubber and carbon fiber - A Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C.

In a matter of minutes, I’d be behind the wheel of one of these machines, and by the end of the day, I’d have driven all three.

With slick road conditions abound and club co-founder Niteal Bhatt sitting next to me, I figured I should play it safe. So I picked the Lamborghini. Sure, it’s got the most horsepower and the biggest engine. But it has all-wheel-drive. Safety first, right?

I popped the key in and fired the ignition. The sudden roar behind me caught me off guard. It’s one thing seeing these cars on the road, but to actually sit in one and get behind the wheel is a completely different experience. Scratch driving a V10 and a Lamborghini off my mental bucket list.

Niteal explained the ins and outs of the car. How to shift manually, how to get it into reverse and neutral and so forth. I adjusted my mirrors. “Most people forget about those,” he said, laughing. All those regular things you do in a regular car, somehow, in a supercar feel different. It's more like you’re flicking the switches in the cockpit of a fighter jet.

The “driving test” consists of a quick loop through Burlington, Ontario and a small blast down the highway. Despite the gloomy and wet conditions and the Lamborghini’s understated dark grey paint, I quickly began to get an idea of what it must be like to own a car like this. People stare, take photos and wave and you can’t help but feel an undeserved sense of accomplishment as you unnecessarily rev the engine while quietly giggling like a child.

The rest of the day would take me behind the wheel of the Ferrari 458 and the McLaren MP4-12C. Each car was an experience. Sprinting down the scenic and open back roads of Burlington with the greatest sight and sound in your rear view mirror is the stuff of dreams.

The saddest part is handing the keys back and walking away.

There is a silver lining though. Oil changes, tire changes, body and paint - none of that was my concern. That’s the kind of experience Supercars Canada will grant you - all the fun without the fuss. In addition, the club also hosts track days as well as corporate events.

"Membership(Membership)":http://www.supercarscanada.com/membership.aspx isn’t exactly cheap; the basic package starts at $10,000 while others run as high as $43,200. Still, compared to the price of a brand new, or even used supercar, those numbers start to look more reasonable.

The club is also updating their fleet of available vehicles - a new Lamborghini Huracan, the second to be sold in Canada, will be their newest addition later this year.
