After swearing the oath of office to become Egypt’s interim president, Adly Mansour has been thrust into the public spotlight. Here’s a look at some facts you may not know about the man who’s replaced the ousted Mohammed Morsi.

  • A father of three, the 67-year-old Mansour was born in Cairo on Dec. 23 1945
  • Graduated from Cairo University’s Law School in 1967
  • Mansour joined the state council in 1970 and climbed the ranks until 1992 when he was appointed as deputy president of the constitutional court
  • Served for many years under former president Hosni Mubarak
  • Helped draft laws for the presidential election that brought Moris into power, including setting timeframe for election campaigning
  • Appointed Head of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court by Morsi in May
  • Served as supreme justice for just two days prior to being named interim president
  • On June 30, “Al-Sha’ab Yureed” (The People Demand) distributed a petition calling for the formation of a presidential council, and listed Mansour’s name as potential member

In his remarks Thursday, Mansour hailed the countywide protests that led to Morsi’s ouster, saying during his acceptance speech the revolution must continue so “we stop producing tyrants.”

While former president Morsi remains under house arrest, Mansour has promised free and open elections, but has yet to set a date.
