ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A witness at an aggravated assault trial in Newfoundland's capital says the victim was jealous of the accused's employer.

Darrell Phelan is accused of stabbing his former girlfriend with a syringe full of blood infected with Hepatitis-C.

A friend of Phelan took the stand Friday in Supreme Court in St. John's and said the victim had accused Phelan of sleeping with his former lawyer and current employer.

The witness indicated that problems in the victim's relationship with Phelan motivated her to fabricate the entire syringe-stabbing event.

The victim did not contract Hepatitis-C, but an infectious disease specialist who treated her has testified the woman could have suffered life-threatening complications.
