The Winnipeg Public Library is getting into the Whiteout spirit by unearthing a vintage cookbook called “The JETS are Cookin’:81-82, Family Recipes.” “There were a couple that were interesting,” said Winnipeg librarian Louis-Philippe Bujold, leafing through the book. “The wives of members of the staff, the coach, anyone was involved in the team, contributed recipes that were staples in their families.” The rare spiral-bound book features dozens of recipes pulled together by the wives of Winnipeg Jets from the 1981-82 season. “We only have one copy,” Bujold said. “This used to be published on a yearly basis. The proceeds of the sale went to various local charities.” Black and white photographs and portraits of the Jets players, coaches and administrative staff accompany each recipe, and each has a write-up on the Jets family contributing. The cover features a line drawing of a player stirring a pot with a hockey stick. Among notable recipes are The Dale Hawerchuk Monster Cookies, left-winger Jimmy Mann’s simply titled “Shrimp- Cooked by Jimmy” and defensive forward Barry Long with his wife, Gail who offered up “14 carat cake”—which did not actually contain fourteen carrots. The 1981-82 season is also remembered for being the first year of centre forward Dale Hawerchuk, who immediately became the team’s star player. The Jets play tonight at 7 p.m. in St. Louis; No word on what is being served for dinner.
