Winnipeg golf course celebrates a century of operating

A Winnipeg golf course marked a century of operating on Wednesday.

Birdies, bogeys and birthday celebrations.

Wednesday marked the 100th anniversary of Winnipeg’s Windsor Park Golf Course.

The city-owned 18-hole course, which stretches along the Seine River between St. Boniface and St. Vital, opened on July 30, 1925.

“Since 1925, generations of Winnipeggers, Manitobans, and guests to our city have walked these fairways, enjoyed the scenery along the Seine River, and embraced the challenge of this beautiful course,” Mayor Scott Gillingham said during a media event at the first hole.

Windsor Park initially opened as a privately owned nine-hole course in 1922. However, the city purchased the course two years later to keep up with growing demand for the sport and converted the sprawling greenspace into an 18-hole course.

“I wonder in a hundred years how many lost balls are represented on this course and how many rounds have been played?” Gillingham added.

According to a city report released in January, more than 33,000 rounds were played at Windsor Park during the 2024 golf season alone.

The golf course is also used as the Windsor Park Nordic Ski Centre during the winter months.

Brian Mayes, city councillor for St. Vital, said he grew up playing on the course and even made his first ever birdie on the 9th hole back in 1982.

“I do remember some of my scores and forget a lot of them, but [Windsor Park] is a testament to public golf and why it’s important to have a mix in the city of Winnipeg,” Mayes said.

Mayes and Gillingham, alongside other elected officials, unveiled a commemorative plaque as part of the celebration.

The city is also offering green fees at a reduced rate of $19.25 until August 4 to mark the occasion.
