Twister touches down near Morris

A tornado touched down briefly just south of Morris this afternoon. There are no reports of injuries or damage.

It was the climax of an afternoon that saw many areas of southern Manitoba under a tornado watch. The watch was lifted shortly after 6 o'clock Monday.

Environment Canada says at least five funnel clouds were reported in southern Manitoba Monday afternoon near the communities of Niverville, Iles des Chenes, Aubigney and Kane.

Environment Canada says conditions were favourable for the development of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes.

The funnel clouds form out of large cumulus clouds or very weak thunderstorms and normally do not have the energy to reach the ground. However one or two of these funnels may briefly touch down and can become destructive over a very small area.

Environment Canada says you should treat all funnel clouds and tornadoes seriously and avoid when possible. Should one develop overhead, take shelter until it dissipates. Remember these funnel clouds will normally appear with little or no warning.

Skywatch weather specialist Sylvia Kuzyk says we can expect unstable weather across southern Manitoba for the next several days.

Tuesday should bring a little more in the way of sunshine. That sunshine will be short-lived however, as another system is expected to enter southern Manitoba on Wednesday.

Expect periods of rain on Thursday with clearing skies by Friday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes game Monday night against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks has been cancelled due to the bad weather. The game will be made up at a double header on June 28.
