Tornado warning issued for parts of Manitoba: ECCC

A tornado warning has been issued for parts of Manitoba Tuesday afternoon.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a red warning for the Rm of Tache and the RM of Ste. Anne.

“Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is possibly producing a tornado,” the warning reads. “Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.”

The alert says the storm is located over Dufrost and moving north at 40 km/h.

Communities in the path include Steinbach, Niverville, New Bothwell, Blumenort, Ste. Anne and Grunthal.

St-Pierre-Jolys, Otterburne, Ste. Agathe, St. Adolphe, La Salle and Landmark, Morris and the R.M. of Hanover were previously under the warning, but it has since lifted.

“This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” ECCC said.

People are advised to take cover immediately in a basement, interior room or a sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches.

This comes as a large portion of Manitoba is under a tornado watch, as ECCC warns developing severe thunderstorms could cause violent weather through parts of the province.

The weather agency issued the alerts Tuesday afternoon for a section of the province including Winnipeg, Brandon, Gimli, Portage la Prairie and Riding Mountain National Park.

“A developing frontal system is forecast to move into southern Manitoba this afternoon, ushering in an unstable air mass ripe for the development of severe thunderstorms,” ECCC wrote in the warning.

A severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect in parts of the southwest including Dauphin, Russell-Binscarth and Roblin.
