The University of Manitoba gave Winnipeggers a firsthand look at science Saturday afternoon. To mark Science Literacy Week, several members of the university’s faculty of science held a science fair at the Manitoba Museum on Saturday. “It’s been great,” said Jillian Detwiler, associate dean of the Faculty of Science at the U of M. “We’ve had all ages of people come through, so we’ve had kids as young as four and five years old, and we’ve had grandparents with their grandkids as well. So it’s been wonderful.” At the fair, multiple experiments were set up, giving attendees lessons about physics, biology and engineering. This year’s theme for Science Literacy Week was Curiosity Unleashed, and Detwiler said the goal is to help explain science to people and help answer questions. “This is where you get very enthusiastic people, very excited to display the inner workings of different aspects of science and a very broad range,” she said. Detwiler added the attendees love hearing the questions that kids and adults ask about their experiments. “You never know what question you’re going to get, and then it really makes you think about your activity or the underlying aspects that you’re trying to show in a different way,” she said.
