A Manitoba man managed to capture a significant sighting of bald eagles in a tree this week. Gregg Penner of Mitchell, Man. was heading into Winnipeg on New Year’s Eve with his son Logan to go shopping. While driving near the Niverville corner at Highway 59 and Highway 311 Gregg spotted several eagles in a tree. “We turned around and I told Logan, ‘Dad has to stop and take some video of this,’” Gregg said in an interview on Friday. “And we stopped for about two or three minutes to watch them soar around and fly.” The pair counted 55 eagles in the trees. “It was really cool,” Logan said. “You don’t get to see that many in one spot,” Gregg said. “I usually see three or four, but this time, it was 55 amazing looking birds.” Gregg said the area the birds were spotted in is located near a chicken farm, which was being cleaned out at the time, and he suspects the birds were scavenging for food. He added it’s impressive to see how the bald eagle population has recovered, as the bird was an endangered species during the 1970s due to habitat loss, and the use of DDT pesticide. “It’s quite the adventure to catch them on the side of the highway,” he said.
