The rate of crime is higher and more severe in rural Manitoba compared to urban areas, newly released data from Statistics Canada suggests. These findings were included in a report released Tuesday looking at 2023 crime data from across Canada. “The police-reported crime rate in the provinces and the Crime Severity Index (CSI) are consistently higher on a year-over-year basis in rural areas than in urban areas,” the report reads. In 2023, Manitoba saw the police-reported crime in rural areas was 65 per cent higher than urban areas, while the crime severity was 41 per cent higher. Along with this, the report found crime rates and severity were higher in northern rural areas, compared to the south. For Manitoba, the report said the violent crime rate was 11,661 incidents per 100,000 residents—among the highest rates in Canada’s northern regions, second only to Saskatchewan.
