An off-duty police officer stopped a retail theft on Saturday. Just before 2:30 p.m., the officer was at a retail business in the 1000 block of Abinojii Mikanah shopping when he witnessed a woman trying to leave the store with several items without paying. He identified himself as a police officer and tried to arrest the woman. According to a media release, this led to a physical altercation and the woman allegedly “swung her arms at the officer, attempted to escape, and bit the officer in the hand.” Patrol officers arrived and arrested the woman. The off-duty officer received medical attention as a precaution. The 22-year-old woman is now facing charges of assaulting and resisting a peace officer, and theft under $5,000. She was detained in custody. None of the charges have been tested in court.
