The Northern Manitoba Blizzard had to play almost two full games of hockey before they could hoist the Turnbull Cup. The Blizzard managed to score at 14:03 in the third overtime period to defeat the Dauphin Kings 2-1 Thursday night in Game 7 of their playoff series to win the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s championship. It’s the Blizzard’s first championship since 2003. The Blizzard drew first blood in the opening period, with Alexandre Andre scoring at 17:38. Declan Hoad of the Kings tied the game late in the second. As the third overtime inched towards closing, Quincy Supprien fired the puck past goaltender Cole Sheffield to earn the win. Both Sheffield and Blizzard goaltender Taye Timmerman were named co-MVPs for the playoffs. The Kings outshot the Blizzards 56-38 through the game. The Blizzard will now compete against the top junior teams across Canada for the Centennial Cup, the top prize of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, in Calgary starting May 8.
