Manitoba has set a new record when it comes to the number of registered physicians practicing in the province. According to the annual report from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, there were 3,498 physicians registered in the province as of April 30, 2025. This marks a net gain of 164 physicians compared to a year earlier, which sets a new record for the province. The report also shows that of the 302 newly registered physicians practicing in Manitoba as of this spring, 70 got their degrees in Manitoba, 67 in other parts of Canada, while 165 were internationally educated. In a statement, Doctor’s Manitoba said the net gain of registered physicians is encouraging but is raising concerns about the decline of Manitoba graduates working in the province. “While the report is encouraging overall, we do see fewer specialists being recruited, and we see fewer Manitoba graduates choosing to stay and practice here,” said Dr. Nichelle Desilets, president of Doctors Manitoba. “Manitoba graduates know our system the best, so this demands a closer look by the health system to see what we can do to keep more Manitoba-trained physicians in the province.” The full report is available online.
