The chief of a Manitoba First Nation has been charged in connection with a historic sexual assault that took place more than 40 years ago. According to Virden RCMP, they received a report on May 5 about an alleged assault that occurred in a western Manitoba community in 1984. RCMP say the alleged victim was a teenager under the age of 16 at the time of the assault, while the suspect was 24 years old. Police are not releasing the name of the victim or the location where the alleged assault took place to protect her identity. An extensive investigation took place and RCMP arrested Vincent Tacan, 65, on Nov. 5. Tacan is the chief of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, RCMP confirmed. He has been charged with sexual assault. Tacan is currently seeking re-election as chief of the First Nation. An election is set to be held on Thursday. According to the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation website, Tacan has previously served as chief from 2004 to 2006, and from 2010 to 2018. The charge has not been proven in court. RCMP continue to investigate. Chief responds to allegations Tacan responded to the allegations in a statement posted on the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation website Monday evening. “I am extremely disappointed that the RCMP chose to release a public statement that was designed and intended to interfere with our upcoming election,” the statement reads in part. “I will defend myself in court. I will ensure my name is cleared. I hope to see my name cleared as your Chief and legal representative.”
