Liberal leadership debate takes place at Metropolitan Theatre

Liberal leadership hopefuls squared off in the Metropolitan Theatre this afternoon for the second of five scheduled debates.

The format was not a debate in the traditional sense, but more of an interview with moderator Harvey Locke, allowing the candidates to showcase their personalities.

The debate was held in front of a sold-out audience.

Justin Trudeau, Martha Hall Findlay, David Bertschi, Martin Cauchon, Deborah Coyne, Marc Garneau, Joyce Murray, George Takach, and Karen McCrimmon were all in attendance.

They offered their views on everything from crime prevention to climate change and their vision for the country’s future.

Trudeau emphasized the need to make use of Canada’s natural resources on the world stage, while Findlay talked about supply management of Canadian farming.

At one point the debate was interrupted by two Idle No More protestors. The men were banging on a drum and calling for Aboriginal rights to be considered a priority.

They were escorted out and the debate carried on.

Several of the candidates commended the protestors for shedding light on Aboriginal rights and getting young people involved in the movement.

A leader will be chosen in April.
