Manitobans 19 and older can grow cannabis plants in their own homes for personal use starting May 1, according to the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA). The Manitoba government announced the lifting of the ban in April 2024 and it was proclaimed into law last week. Under the new legislation, a person 19 years of age or older can grow up to four cannabis plants at one time in a single residence. A total of four plants are allowed, even if two or more people 19 years or older live in the same home. The LGCA says plants need to be grown indoors in a room or in a container that is securely locked so youth cannot gain access. They also warn that rental properties and condo boards may also have restrictions on growing cannabis, so people will need to check before they grow. The LGCA adds that starter materials, such as seeds, need to be purchased from licensed retailers. Quebec remains the only province with a homegrown cannabis ban for personal use.
