Former city councillor Amaro Silva dies

Amaro Silva, who represented Winnipeg's Daniel McIntyre ward, in the 1990s has died.

“Amaro will be remembered as a strong voice for Winnipeg, and we are proud he served as a member of our City Council,” said Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman in a statement. “On behalf of the City of Winnipeg and my City Council colleagues, we extend our deepest condolences to Amaro’s family at this difficult time.”

Silva also served on the board of directors for Victoria General Hospital, the West End Winnipeg Business Improvement Zone Board, the Committee on Planning and Community Services and the Winter Cities Association, said Bowman's office.

Flags at city hall have been lowered following Amaro's death.

Amaro Silva served as a councillor from 1992 to 1998. He also served as a past executive director of the Better Business Bureau.

He died Friday following an illness.
