First look at new centre that will detain drug-intoxicated people up to 72 hours

Media were given a sneak peek at the new 72-hour detox centre in Winnipeg.

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba government and health officials say a new facility that will detain people high on drugs for up to 72 hours will offer care and connect addicts to other services.

Media were given a tour of the new protective care centre in central Winnipeg.

Set to open by the end of the month, it houses 20 sparse concrete rooms with toilets, sinks, video surveillance, and mattresses that are not yet in place.

Until now, highly intoxicated people could only be detained up to 24 hours, and the NDP government passed a law to extend the maximum to 72 hours for people on methamphetamines and other long-lasting drugs.

Dr. Rob Grierson, the medical director of the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service, says people being held will be checked regularly and paramedics will be on-site 24 hours a day.

Bernadette Smith, the minister of housing, addictions and homelessness, says future centres could be opened in other cities such as Brandon and Thompson.
