The Winnipeg Police Service has made an arrest after an elderly couple was attacked during what officers described as a “random” home invasion in the city’s Templeton neighbourhood. According to police, the incident took place around 6:30 p.m. on Monday when the couple was sitting at home in their living room on Meredith Bay. An unknown man entered their home and armed himself with a knife. Police allege that without provocation, the elderly woman was punched and the man was stabbed. The suspect then left the home and 911 was contacted. The woman was treated on scene, while the man, who is in his 80s, was taken to the hospital in unstable condition. He has since been upgraded to stable condition. Officers said they found an “intoxicated” suspect near the home and took him into custody. A knife was found during the arrest. A 23-year-old man is facing charges of break, enter and commit aggravated assault; assault with a weapon; and possession of a weapon. He was detained in custody, and the charges have not been tested in court. Neighbour shocked by attack A neighbour, who has been living on Meredith Bay for over 40 years, said they are shocked by the incident. “It’s just something that you never think is going to happen on your quiet, perfect, little bay, right?” the neighbour, who asked not to be named, said in a Tuesday interview. “And it did, very close to home.” The neighbour added that they feel better knowing a suspect has been arrested but noted there are other offenders still out there. “That’s the problem. We need a solution.”
