History The riding was created in 1996, and has been a right-wing stronghold since its creation. The Reform and Alliance parties represented the region in its first elections until merging with the Progressive Conservatives to create the Conservative Party of Canada. Former Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister represented Portage-Lisgar from 200-2008. Bergen stepped down from politics in 2023, and Branden Leslie won a byelection in June. The People’s Party of Canada has had strong showings in the area in the 2021 election and the 2023 byelection. Boundaries The riding includes Portage la Prairie, Winkler, Morden, Carman, Altona and other rural areas. It is also home to Long Plain First Nation and Dakota Tipi First Nation. Demographics Portage-Lisgar has a population of 100,417, according to the 2021 Census. It is an increase from 97,354 in 2016. The riding has a significant percentage of people (20.6 per cent) who speak German.
