Sunshine has returned to Manitoba on Friday – and so have much colder temperatures. After southern regions were spoiled with soaring highs well above the freezing mark on Thursday, temperatures will drop on Friday afternoon. The culprit is a cold front that passed over the province on Thursday night, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). The tradeoff for the southeast will be sunshine on Friday afternoon, while the southwest will be cloudy, with a chance of flurries or freezing drizzle. That could make roads and highways slippery, particularly after Thursday mild conditions. Northern Manitoba will bask in the February sunshine on Friday, with daytime highs in the -20s in most areas. The sky is also sunny over northwestern Ontario, where temperatures will reach the mid-minus teens on Friday afternoon. A fresh round of snow will begin to fall in northern regions on Friday evening. ECCC said a stronger low will bring 5 to10 cm of snow on Sunday. Meanwhile, milder air will return to the south, with temperatures rising overnight into Saturday morning in strong and gusty south winds. Strong south winds will also pick up overnight in Winnipeg and the southeast, but temperatures will drop in the low -20s. Still, the weekend will be mild, but cloudy across southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg. Daytime highs will remain well above normal. ECCC said above seasonal temperatures are likely to stick around for the first half of February.
