Winter home safety tips: Fire officials

Fire officials are sharing home safety tips for the winter season.

More snow is expected to come, leading to Lakeshore Fire Department to prompt safety inside and out of the home.

During snow events, ensure all vents outside of your house are cleared, as blocked vents can cause a build up of carbon monoxide inside the home, which can be deadly.

“Raising awareness about carbon monoxide is crucial for the safety of our communities,” said Jason Suchiu, Lakeshore Fire Chief.

“Carbon monoxide has no smell or taste, which makes being proactive even more important. Taking a few small steps today can help prevent dangerous, and even deadly, consequences.”

Here’s what you should do:

• Check and clear snow from outdoor exhaust vents from appliances like dryers, furnaces, and stoves
• Check carbon monoxide alarms and make sure one is installed on every floor and outside of bedrooms
• Shovel snow away from fire hydrants to give crews quick access
• Keep lights on at night and house numbers visible so first responders can find your home quickly in case of an emergency
• Clear driveways and sidewalks to ensure safe access
• Keep space heaters at least one metre from combustible materials and never leave them unattended
