What Windsor riders need to know about e-scooter rules this summer

With gas prices climbing and warmer weather finally here, more people are turning to e-scooters to get around Windsor-Essex.

You’ve likely seen them zipping around town, but what you might not realize is that Ontario’s in the midst of a pilot project – allowing municipalities to decide how and where e-scooters can operate locally.

The City of Windsor opted into the program through an amendment to its traffic bylaw, allowing both personal and shared e-scooter use.

Shared e-scooter and e-bike services launched in Windsor in 2021 through Bird Canada.

According to the city, Windsor also takes part in an Ontario Ministry of Transportation working group alongside other municipalities involved in the pilot project, which is set to continue until 2029.

Under provincial rules:

• Riders must be at least 16 years old
• Helmets are required for anyone under 18
• E-scooters speeds are limited to a maximum 24 kilometres an hour
• Only one rider is allowed at a time

They’re also required to have a white front light, red rear light, and reflective material if being used after dark – and you need a bell or horn.

Demand growing as gas prices rise

TJ Dowhaniuk from SOAR Hobby and More says interest in e-scooters has been climbing as gas prices rise heading into summer.

“I’m getting people looking for one for a shorter commute to work to save on gas,” he said.

“I’m having kids come in to save on bus money going to school and older people looking for one in retirement.”

LaSalle police also recently reminded residents that e-scooters are allowed in parks, provided riders are respectful of others using the space.

Dowhaniuk says there’s one piece of safety equipment he recommends for everyone – regardless of age requirements.

“Generally, I do suggest getting a helmet,” he said.

“Just because you’re going at these higher speeds and you’re completely silent while you’re on these.

“So, it’s very easy for people not paying attention to hit you,” he said.
