Three Las Vegas hotels now accepting Canadian dollar at par

A company in Vegas is offering Canadians an incentive to return as Canadian travel to the U.S. continues to fall. CTV Windsor's Travis Fortnum explains.

Three hotels in Las Vegas are now accepting the Canadian dollar at equivalent value to the American dollar for select gaming, hotel, and drink services.

Circa Resort and Casino, the D Las Vegas, and Golden Gate Hotel and Casino will participate in the ‘At Par’ program until Aug. 31. The goal is to remove financial barriers for Canadians wanting to travel to Vegas.

Canadians will also be able to gamble at par by redeeming up to $500 in slot promotional play, according to the hotels.

Derek Stevens, CEO of the three hotels, has strong ties with Canada, which is why he launched the program.

“I grew up in Grosse Pointe, Mich. right across the lake from Windsor, Ont. I literally could see Canada from my bedroom,” Stevens said in a video posted to Instagram.

“You could hear Canada from my bedroom. My parents still live in the same house. My dad went to the University of Toronto, got family from Toronto, to Leamington, to Windsor, and personally for me, I spent a lot of my 19th and 20th years visiting great places in Windsor.”

Stevens added that with his three hotels, he wants to invite Canada back to Las Vegas.

“Something I remember happening living on a border town in the Detroit metropolitan area, I want to go at par. So if you book on our website, you book a hotel room, Canadian dollars go off as American dollars,” he said.

“If you want to come in anytime, I’m going to have a bar at each one of my hotels, where everything goes off at par whether it’s with paper money or using your credit card, you get the appropriate discount based upon the exchange rate.”
