Alliance for Trans Youth started three years ago, dedicated to advocating for queer and transgender youth. “This is as much an important community public protest type event as it is just a gathering of friends and community members,” organizer Sabrina told CTV News Sunday. Sabrina, who did not want her last name included in the coverage, says she is involved in the movement to support her family and friends who are queer or trans. “I care about them, and I want them to live in a world that supports and encourages them and becoming their full selves,” Sabrina said. “But I also think this is bigger than me and my family.” Sabrina marched Sunday in protest of “transphobic political regimes,” particularly those in the United States. “I know that there’s been a lot of really scary anti-trans lawfare that has impacted people’s ability to access health care, that is life saving and gender affirming. People are not able to use the restrooms or the facilities that align with their gender identity, and that can make being in public difficult or impossible,” Sabrina said. She also wanted any youth in Windsor-Essex to know about their organization, called the Alliance for Trans Youth. The one thing every Windsorite can do to support the community, Sabrina says, is to learn about their community with empathy and caring. “The most powerful thing you can do to support is become informed and start coming out to these events and learn something while you’re here,” she said.
