The St. Clair College musical theatre program is gearing up for a limited run of the Broadway classic, ‘On the Town’, Thursday through Saturday at The Chrysler Theatre. ‘On the Town’ premiered in New York City’s famous theatre district in 1944. The story focuses on three American sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in the Big Apple during World War II with comedic and romantic flare. In addition, the story features timeless numbers including “New York, New York”, “Lonely Town”, and “Lucky to Be Me” amongst others. In 1949, the story was adapted to film with music by Leonard Bernstein and Roger Edens, and a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The film was in turn an adaptation of the Broadway stage musical entitled ‘On the Town’ (1944). The original story for ‘On the Town’ came from Jerome Robbins’ ballet, titled Fancy Free of 1944. A 20-piece orchestra accompanies the ensemble cast of student performers. Carrie-Anne Daugherty is the director of the production. It’s the endpiece to a year of study and rehearsal for the student-performers and the director is grateful to be working with the artists. “I am extremely lucky to be working with these guys,” said Daugherty. “They are hard working, patient, talented. They follow direction very well. And they’re a joy to be with every day. I we’ve laughed a lot. There’s a lot of comedy in the show, but and they have embraced it and we laugh a lot as a group as you can tell.” Tickets are available via the Chrysler theatre box office: April 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m., April 25 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for general admission and $20 for students.
