The town of Leamington issued a news released Monday, following “constructive discussions” with the junior hockey team. At their meeting on March 10th, council agreed to support Windsor-based Rose City Gymnastics’ bid to host the 2027 Provincial championships at Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre. If successful, the town agreed to thaw the ice in the Highbury Canco rink to clear the way for the gymnasts. However, that could impact the Flyers post-season, forcing the team to find somewhere else to host home games should they make it past the second round in 2027. Jason Melo, co-owner of the Flyers told CTV News on March 17 he was “disappointed” to not have been included in the discussion before council agreed to support the bid, noting it would be “very difficult” to move a junior home game to a different rink. Mayor Hilda MacDonald told CTV at the time, the initial support was just a starting point and “nothing is finalized”. Now, in a news release, the town says a “Notice of Reconsideration” has been issued for the next council meeting on March 24th. “Moving forward, both parties recognize the importance of maintaining a collaborative and transparent process,” the news release reads. The town also says the Flyers have now “reaffirmed their intention to remain in Leamington for years to come”.
