Investigators still not ready to identify suspects in Grewal murder

Three months after Nancy Grewal was murdered in LaSalle, investigators are still not ready to identify suspects.

The investigation into the murder of Windsor’s Nancy Grewal is still not yet ready to identify any suspects three months after the slaying at a home in LaSalle.

Detective-Inspector Mike Deyell, the lead investigator on the case for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), tells CTV News work is ongoing to track down whoever is responsible for the high-profile crime.

“We’re not ready to publicly identify any suspects at this point in time. The investigation is moving forward. We’re making great headway,” said Deyell. “We’ve had a lot of assistance from the public and that’s been crucial.”

It was on March 3 at 9:30 p.m. when police in LaSalle arrived at a home on Todd Lane where Grewal, 45, was found suffering from stab wounds.

She was pronounced dead in hospital.

OPP have since taken the lead on the investigation first initiated by the LaSalle Police Service.

Police have stressed Grewal’s killing was targeted — but why she was victimized remains an open question.

Unconfirmed motive

There is widespread conjecture online linking Grewal’s social media commentary concerning the Khalistan independence issue in India, and extremists within the movement, as key to the answer.

The movement sees supporters aim to create a Sikh state in India’s northern Punjab region.

“We’re looking at all potentials,” said Deyell. “Obviously, that has been widely reported in the media and on social media circles. So, that’s one aspect that we’re looking at, but we can’t definitively identify a motive at this point in time.”

When asked about the potential impact of the political tensions on the investigation, Deyell urged possible tipsters to “break free of fear” in coming to police to find justice for Grewal.

“I think that’s a challenge in every investigation. It’s always difficult sometimes for some people to come forward,” said Deyell. “There is that natural fear that comes with that.”

The dramatic killing of the personal support worker has attracted international attention, including from People Magazine, writing about Grewal’s online activity sharing lifestyle and political commentary videos.

Deyell says the high-profile nature of the case has led to a lot of tips and video evidence for the investigation — but is confident there is still key evidence that hasn’t come to light.

“We believe that there are people that are in the Windsor area or abroad that have additional details that may assist us in moving this investigation forward,” said Deyell.

He adds the language barrier, with many social media posts concerning the case written in Punjabi, has also added a wrinkle to the investigation.

“Even if you think we may know something because you read it online, it doesn’t hurt to bring it to our attention again, because there is so much discussion online that we may not be aware of every little piece that’s being discussed or some of the language barriers that may hamper those investigative efforts,” said Deyell.

Arson investigation

The homicide investigation is also looking into potential links from an arson probe launched at Grewal’s own home, after her front porch was set on fire in Nov. 2025.

The incident was caught on a home security camera, with a person dressed in a black hoodie pouring, what appears to be, gasoline across the front of the house before lighting it on fire and running away, red jerry can in hand, back to an awaiting car.

Deyell says the video evidence clearly indicates multiple people were involved in the arson and potential connections to the homicide are being considered.

“We work every homicide until it’s solved, or until it’s definitively closed,” said Deyell.

As with the homicide, investigators believe the arson was also a targeted act.

LaSalle police along with the OPP have assumed the arson investigation from the Windsor Police Service and continue to work it.
